Movie: Del Amor y Otros Demonios
The premiere of 'Del Amor y Otros Demonios' a film written and directed by Hilda Hidalgo, costa rican born and bred ,premiered in cinemas this past weekend all over Costa Rica. The movie, based on the novel of same name, of the famous colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez, is a provocative love story during the Inquisition and age of slavery that comes to remind us that love is such a strong force, maybe strongest of all other feelings , stronger and more powerful than even reason, so strong that trying to fight it may prove fatal.
The production of this film lasted about 5 years. Finding the ideal actor to play the role of Sierva Maria took about 3 years and the casting was done trying out hundreds of girls from countries like Brasil, Cuba, Colombia and Costa Rica. The chosen one was Eliza Triana, a colombian girl, who was 13 years old when the movie was filmed. She comes from a family known in cinema and theater circles.
Eliza plays the role of Sierva Maria, a white girl raised by African American slaves, who at the age of 13 wants to know "what kisses taste like" (this concept makes sense in Spanish, sometimes translation can be a waltz on ice). One day the young lady was bitten by a sick dog and during that time rabies were considered an illness brought on by demons and all things evil, she was sent to a convent to be exorcised. there she meets Cayetano, a young spanish priest who was in charge of liberating her from the demons. This is where the forbidden love theme enters and her crush for the priest begins.
The role of Cayetano, the spanish priest, is played by the spanish actor Pablo Derqui, an important young actor of his generation, who in a short time has built a promising career in theater and television. He finished his studies in the Theater Institute of Barcelona and he can perform comfortably in spanish, catala, english and french. This year he was awarded "Best Actor" at the Malaga Independent Film Festival held in Spain.
About the film, some reviews describe it as a cinematic masterpiece , an elegant, delicate and tastefully put together movie, while others refer to it as a movie that strays to far from the novel.
In any event I personally enjoyed this flick and found it most moving, like the taste of a kiss that stays with you all the way home. check out billboards boards link for more info.
