San Antonio de Belen

by Geoff McCabe

San Antonio de BelenBelen, which is part of the Grand Metropolitan Area and a canton of Heredia, is a safe and peaceful area, conveniently located in the Central Valley, less than 10 minutes from Juan Santamaria International Airport and with easy access to San Jose Center, Alajuela, Heredia and the famous Escazu and Santa Ana suburbs.

San Antonio, a small community close to the Cariari Golf Country Club, is the capital city of the canton of Belen in the province of Heredia in Costa Rica. The canton of Belen covers an area of 12.15km2 and has a population of 19,834. The 2 other districts include Ribera and Asuncion located at higher grounds than San Antonio.

Belen, surrounded by mountains, boasts the best weather in the country, warm in the mornings and cooler in the evenings with average temperatures of 20-25 Celsius.

Although Belen is more peaceful with cheaper real estate than Santa Ana and Escazu, it is quickly growing and becoming an up and coming area with gated community developments, several home construction projects, plenty of entertainment and accommodation options to choose from.

Due to its proximity to the international airport, Belen has expanded its lodging offer and now counts with several country inns, apart-hotels, small hotels and hostels. The main tourist attractions include the Ojo de Agua, a natural pool than gets 23 000 liters of fresh water per minute originated from an underground river and the 18 hole golf course at the Cariari Country Club.

Entertainment is not scarce in Belen where you can find 6 film theaters, 2 malls, casinos, bars, many fine restaurants and even an amphitheater for large scale concerts and tradeshows, the Pedregal.

The Central Valley has always been a popular area to live for both ticos and foreign residents in Costa Rica and Belen is an attractive option to retire and settle down for people looking for affordable but comfortable living.
